SFCC Alert Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is SFCC Alert?

SFCC has partnered with Rave Mobile Safety to offer an emergency notification system. We use SFCC Alert to communicate emergency and weather situations to students, employees, affiliate personnel, and friends of SFCC via email and text messages.

  • Who can subscribe to and use the service?

Students, employees and affiliates with active SFCC email addresses (@sfccmo and @student.sfccmo.edu) and any existing mobile phone numbers on file with SFCC are automatically subscribed to receive SFCC Alerts. Students, employees and affiliates can add and manage emergency notification information in mySTAR > My Stuff > My Personal Information. Up to three mobile phone numbers and three email addresses can receive SFCC Alerts.

Friends of SFCC (anyone without an @sfccmo.edu email address) may also subscribe and can opt out at any time.

  • I attend SFCC at an extended campus location. Will I receive messages about emergencies or closures happening at that location?

Yes. Anytime an alert is issued for closings or emergencies on any campus, all users will receive the message. Many of our students and faculty travel to more than one location.

  • Who are affiliates at SFCC?

Affiliates include Great Western and Ellucian employees, SFCC Board of Trustees members, temporary employees, and dual credit instructors.

  • Can I subscribe if I am located on or frequently visit an SFCC campus, but I am not an SFCC student, employee or affiliate?

Yes. Friends of SFCC (anyone without an @sfccmo.edu email address) may subscribe and can opt out at any time.

Users who subscribe on the Rave site will be prompted to create an account and validate their mobile phone numbers by entering in the website a four-digit code that is sent to their phone via SMS. Users also will receive a welcome email during the self-enrollment registration process.

  • Is there a cost for the service?

Rave does not charge subscribers to send or receive SMS messages. Standard or other messaging charges may apply depending on your wireless carrier plan and subscription details.

  • What types of messages will I receive and how often will I receive them?

Situations where SFCC Alerts could be issued include severe weather, campus operating status and imminent dangers affecting our campus communities. We respect your privacy and you will never receive anything besides official SFCC communications. You will never receive advertisements and your information is never provided to advertisers. SFCC reserves the right to use text and email messaging to communicate other important college information on an opt-in, as-needed basis.

Fortunately, the college does not have frequent emergencies. In some academic semesters, the only messages sent will be a system test message.

  • What is my user name and password to update my information?

Students, employees and affiliates should use their network ID and password to log into mySTAR > My Stuff > My Personal Information to add and manage emergency notification information.

Friends of SFCC should use the email address and password they used when they initially subscribed on SFCC’s Rave site.

  • How will I identify incoming messages from SFCC Alert?

You will be sent messages from what are known as “short codes.” The messages will come from either 67283 or 226787. We encourage you to save these numbers into your phone so you will recognize them when messages are sent. Some smaller carriers do not support short code messaging. For these carriers, you will receive messages from messages@getrave.com.

Email messages will be from SFCC Alert – sfccalert@getrave.com.

All messages will begin with “SFCC Alert” to further identify that the message is an official SFCC emergency or weather-related communication.

  • What if my contact information changes?

If your mobile phone number or email address changes, you can make updates online. Students, employees and affiliates should manage their emergency notification information in mySTAR > My Stuff > My Personal Information. Friends of SFCC should log into SFCC’s Rave site and update contact details.

  • My cell phone is listed in mySTAR > My Stuff > My Personal Information, but I didn't receive a text message. Why?

It’s possible the cell phone number is not listed as a “Mobile Phone” type in mySTAR. If that’s the case, delete the entry and re-add it using “Mobile Phone” as the type.

  • Does it matter who my mobile phone provider/carrier is?

No. The emergency notification system supports all United States mobile carriers. If you change your mobile phone provider, you do not have to change anything; however, it may take several weeks for your mobile provider to update the Rave system. During that time, it is possible that you will not be able to receive messages.

  • Will my personal information be shared with third parties?

No. Your email addresses and mobile phone numbers will only be provided to our SFCC Alert vendor, Rave Mobile Safety, which will protect the data as stated under Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines.

  • What if I don’t want to receive text alerts from the college?

Students, employees and affiliates are strongly discouraged from opting out of the text alert portion of the system as the information provided by SFCC Alert can save your life during an emergency or threatening situation, or, at the very least, keep you from coming to campus on a snow closure day.

Students, employees and affiliates can choose to not receive text messages by not providing mobile phone numbers or unchecking the SFCC Alert box next to a mobile phone number in mySTAR.

  • How do I configure SFCC email on my mobile phone?

Students, employees and affiliates who want to configure SFCC email on their mobile phones can find a helpful setup wizard and configuration directions in mySTAR > Campus Resources > Central Help Desk. If you need additional help with this setup, call the Help Desk at (866) 295-3070.

  • How do I completely unsubscribe?

Friends of SFCC who wish to be removed from SFCC Alert can text the word STOP to 67283, or log in to SFCC’s Rave site to delete their accounts. The option to delete is found by logging in and selecting “edit.” Please contact Rave by email at techsupport@ravewireless.com or call (866) 696-4447 for further assistance.

Students, employees and affiliates may unsubscribe mobile phone numbers and non-sfccmo.edu email addresses in mySTAR by unchecking the SFCC Alert box next to a mobile phone number or email address. SFCC email addresses cannot be unchecked and SFCC Alerts are sent by default.

  • Who do I contact for assistance?

Students, employees, and guests should direct questions about how to add and manage their emergency contact information in mySFCC by calling the 24/7 Help Desk at (866) 295-3070.

Friends of SFCC should contact Rave by email at techsupport@ravewireless.com or call (866) 696-4447.
