What do AEL tutors do?
Our Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) tutors help adult learners who want to improve their reading, writing and math skills. They also assist students who are studying to take the High School Equivalency test, and work with English Language Learner students who want to improve their ability to speak, read and write in English.
The most important role of a volunteer tutor is to support students’ efforts and encourage success. Through regular meetings and individualized lessons, tutors help our learners access job information, pursue career advancement, develop greater self-esteem, become participating members of the community, and grow into lifelong learners.
Should I volunteer?
If you’re friendly, have a flexible schedule and enjoy working one-on-one to help others, you could make a great volunteer tutor for our AEL program. A student’s relationship with a compassionate, optimistic volunteer tutor is special, and helping someone improve his or her reading, writing, math, or English skills can be rewarding. Tutors and students come from diverse backgrounds, and the relationships they build usually are mutually enriching ones.
What responsibilities and tasks will I have?
- Participate in tutor-training workshops and follow-up training as necessary
- Meet regularly and punctually with your student (60-minute sessions three times per week or 90-minute sessions two times per week)
- Individualize lessons to best help your student, adjust lessons to your student’s needs and goals and discuss changes with the literacy coordinator
- Notify the literacy coordinator when your student’s goals are met
- Ask for help and advice when needed
- Share activities and strategies that were successful for your student
- Obtain books and other materials as needed from the literacy coordinator
- Write a brief report of each session and a brief plan for the next session
- Keep the coordinator informed of changes in your student’s attendance status, schedule, progress, etc.
