The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art is hosting the “Threads That Bind: Elucidating Diverse Voices of Womanhood” exhibit in the Cooney and Ditzfeld galleries on the State Fair Community College Sedalia campus. There will be a public reception for the exhibit in conjunction with the opening of the SFCC Student Art Show at 5 p.m. April 13.  Remarks will begin at 5:30 p.m.

“Threads that Bind” offers a new lens into the complex visual history of women’s work. Through a diverse range of mediums, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, and textiles, this show aims to reframe traditional gender norms and offer a fresh, empowering perspective on what it means to be a woman artist. “Threads that Bind” was co-curated by SFCC Art History Instructor Dr. Meghan McClellan, Daum Collections Manager Marcie Teter, and Daum Curator of Education Vicki Weaver.

“Womanhood in terms of art was regulated to a critical domain that did not allow aggressive, angular brushstrokes, large canvases, or sculptures, and yet, overt emotions, representations of women’s lives, and women’s work were inherently dismissed as ‘less than,’” said Dr. McClellan. “This exhibition aims to represent the duality of womanhood and the individuals that dare to challenge our view of what it means to be a woman artist.”

The annual Student Art Show, a State Fair Community College tradition dating back to the late 1960s, is open to all students currently taking studio art classes at the college. Student artists collaborate with Art program faculty to select work that best represents them. This year’s exhibition will showcase traditional art-making techniques as well as new directions and technologies that the Art program and its students are exploring, including computer-based VR (virtual reality) tools and 3D printing. The show will close May 14.

“’Threads that Bind’ is representative of our commitment to making a place for a diversity of voices at the Daum,” said Garry Holstein, Daum Museum director and curator. “Further, it exemplifies the practice of allowing members of the group to identify how to best go about manifesting that voice. Both exhibitions serve to highlight how Daum enhances the student experience and provides opportunities for student, staff, and faculty development.”
