State Fair Community College continued a time-honored tradition April 24 by announcing the 2026 Instructor of the Year, Staff Member of the Year and Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year. The awards were presented during a ceremony at 1 p.m. in Stauffacher Theatre on the Sedalia campus.
Students nominated candidates for the three awards, recognizing excellence in teaching and job performance, student engagement, positive impact and contributions to the college community. A student selection committee reviewed nominations and selected the recipients.
Angie Gentry, a mathematics instructor, was named SFCC’s 2026 Instructor of the Year. Students praised Gentry for transforming fear into confidence and creating a supportive learning environment. One student said she helped them overcome a decade-long fear of math, enabling success later in life. Others cited her clear explanations, dedication beyond the classroom and consistent support.
In her teaching philosophy, Gentry emphasizes recognizing diverse student backgrounds and learning styles while using a variety of techniques to engage students. She said she is motivated by watching students collaborate, grow and experience breakthrough moments.
Brandon Hammond, a TRiO Student Success coach, was named SFCC’s 2026 Staff Member of the Year. Students recognized Hammond for providing exceptional support and creating a welcoming, safe environment where they feel valued and encouraged. Nominations highlighted his patience, positivity and commitment to helping students succeed, often going above and beyond his role.
Hammond’s philosophy centers on connection, consistency and compassion. He believes students succeed when they feel seen, heard and supported, and he strives to build confidence in their ability to achieve their goals.
Greg Harrell, a criminal justice adjunct instructor, was named SFCC’s 2026 Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year. Students commended Harrell for his personalized feedback, responsiveness and genuine care for student success. Many said his thoughtful comments and encouragement helped them feel seen and capable, while his accessibility made a meaningful difference in their academic experience.
Harrell’s teaching philosophy reflects his commitment to student success and acknowledges the challenges many students face while balancing education, work and family. He believes instructors are responsible for ensuring students feel supported throughout their educational journey.
In addition to the primary awards, students introduced a new recognition, the Roadrunner Choice Award, honoring an individual not eligible for the other awards who has made a meaningful impact on students. This year’s recipient is Peggy Ede of Great Western, recognized for her positive attitude, genuine interactions and dedication to supporting students.
The Instructor of the Year award dates to 1988, the Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year to 2007 and the Staff Member of the Year to 2010. Each year’s recipients join past honorees, with photos displayed in the Yeater Learning Center lobby on the Sedalia campus.
The student selection committee included Jacob Merritt, Lilly Moss, Benedict Brown and Elisa French.
All honorees received plaques and will be recognized for their contributions to the SFCC community.
