State Fair Community College’s Student Support Services (SSS) TRiO program has received another five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education. SFCC’s program will receive $305,615 per year to serve 160 students annually up through August 31, 2030. SFCC received its first SSS grant in September 2000, and it has been renewed for consecutive funding cycles since then..

Through a grant competition, funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. SSS programs also may provide grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants.

The mission of the SSS program is to help first generation students, who meet income eligibility requirements, to graduate from SFCC and to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor’s degree. First generation students are students whose parents or guardians do not have a bachelor’s degree prior to the student’s 18th birthday

All TRiO services are free to participating students at all SFCC locations. Services include tutoring, personalized academic advising, career exploration, assistance with Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion, financial literacy, four-year college visits, cultural enrichment, scholarship assistance, study and life skills workshops, and transfer assistance to four-year colleges and universities.
