The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Board of Trustees voted Monday, Aug. 18, to place the SFCC Operations Levy on the Nov. 4, 2025, ballot.
The SFCC Operations Levy seeks voter approval to increase the college’s operating tax levy by 10 cents per $100 of assessed property valuation. If approved, the estimated levy would be $0.4993 per $100 of assessed valuation and would not go into effect until the 2026 tax year. For a $200,000 market value home, the additional tax would be $38 per year, approximately $3 per month, or a dime per day.
According to the SFCC Operations Levy, funding will be used to:
- Maintain, update and expand career training programs in healthcare, agriculture, K–12 teacher preparation, manufacturing and skilled trades
- Maintain and upgrade campus technology and infrastructure
- Maintain, repair, secure, equip, and improve campus facilities
“Our commitment is preparing students for in-demand jobs, which aligns with our mission to serve our communities and provide relevant and responsive learning experiences that empower our students,” SFCC President Dr. Brent Bates said. “Keeping our programs, facilities, technology and equipment up to date is essential for SFCC to fulfill its mission. The SFCC Operations Levy will greatly enhance the college’s ability to serve our communities effectively.”
Patty Wood, SFCC Board of Trustees President, said the board has always taken a conservative approach to budgeting. “Our current levy is the same as the levy was 50 years ago,” Wood said. “In that time, our operating costs have risen dramatically. Local taxes have declined from approximately one/third of the College’s operating budget to 11 percent of the budget today. This additional funding will help us maintain our programs and infrastructure so we can continue to provide exceptional opportunities for our students. With the passage of the SFCC Operations Levy, local taxes would support approximately 13.5 percent of the college’s operating budget, far less than when the college began.”
