State Fair Community College recently continued a long-standing tradition by announcing the recipients of the 2025 Instructor, Staff and Adjunct of the Year awards. Students nominated candidates for each honor, and a committee of student leaders selected the winners.

Danielle Brooks, a biology instructor, was named Instructor of the Year. Brooks sees her role as more than delivering content.

“My mission isn’t just to teach science,” Brooks said. “It’s to teach students how to learn hard things—not just today, not just in my class, but for life.”

Students praised Brooks for her passion and positivity. One wrote, “She’s always upbeat and cares about what she’s teaching us.” Another shared, “She has made my learning experience wonderful. She truly impacted my knowledge of the human body.”

Leah Mullen, a TRiO student success coach, was named Staff Member of the Year. She believes student success begins with genuine connection and care.

“Even a simple smile or greeting can brighten a student’s day and remind them they matter,” Mullen said. “I strive to build meaningful relationships by listening, remembering what’s important to them, and showing that I truly care. As a former State Fair student, I know how powerful it is to feel seen and supported—and now, it’s my mission to offer that same support to others.”

Students described Mullen as supportive, encouraging and deeply committed. One wrote, “She’s been a tremendous help to everyone—whether it’s figuring out schedules or pushing us to get homework done.”

Renee Young, a math instructor who teaches remotely, was named Adjunct of the Year for her positive and student-centered teaching approach.

“Positivity is a cornerstone of my approach to teaching,” Young said. “I strive to be a source of inspiration, guidance and encouragement, helping students build not only their knowledge but also the confidence to apply it.”

Students consistently praised Young for her compassion and responsiveness. One student wrote, “She’s the most understanding and accommodating of any of my instructors.” Another said, “She’s the only instructor who has made me feel truly cared for as a person.”

All three honorees received plaques, and their photos will be displayed in the Yeater Learning Center lobby on the Sedalia campus. They also will lead the faculty and staff procession at commencement on May 16.
