Sedalia, MissouriMarch 14, 2024 Sedalia Mayor Pro-Tem Rhiannon Foster and US Senator Eric Schmitt’s District Director, Adam Timmerman, met and visited with TRiO’s Upward Bound program students at the Thompson Conference Center on the Sedalia campus on Feb. 27 for a proclamation signing of TRiO Day.

“National TRiO Day was first declared on Feb. 24, 1986, to commemorate the accomplishments of the Federal TRiO programs across the country,” said Jeromy Layman, Upward Bound Director. “Each year, we ask for a local proclamation signing in our service communities to celebrate the hard work our students do to reach their full potential.”

In addition to the proclamation signing, the Upward Bound students in attendance participated in team building, a campus tour, and an orientation meeting about the six-week college immersion experience held every summer by the program. Students take courses in mathematics, laboratory science, literature and composition, and foreign languages. Students who successfully complete the summer academy are eligible to participate in an end-of-summer cultural trip. This year, the trip will be a tour of southern Missouri and Arkansas, with college visits to Missouri Southern State University and the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville, as well as other cultural activities.

Foster and Timmerman were also given the opportunity to tour the campus and learn more about TRiO’s annual summer academy and trip. Among those present were also Upward Bound Academic Coordinator Linda Creach, Legislative Program Manager Jo Lynn Turley, and Upward Bound Academic Advisors.

Upward Bound is a federally funded pre-college academic enrichment program for first-generation students in grades nine through 12. The Lake of the Ozarks Upward Bound (UB) program is housed at the State Fair Community College-Lake of the Ozarks campus with offices in Camdenton High School and Eldon High School. The UB Sedalia program is housed at Smith-Cotton High School. Both programs motivate participants to develop the skills necessary to complete high school and successfully obtain a college degree.
