State Fair Community College has been awarded $75,270 by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) through its Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) grant. This funding will offset the cost of tuition for veterans and their family members in SFCC’s Commercial Driving Academy, helping expand the number of Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders receiving advanced safety training.

“Our department’s number one mission is to ensure that every American gets home safely,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “We’re backing aggressive enforcement and empowering states to keep unqualified, unvetted drivers off the road, investing in state-of-the-art technology to make our roads safer, and taking care of veterans interested in a career in trucking.”

FMCSA is awarding more than $3.4 million to educational institutions, associations, and government entities through the CMVOST grant program. The program aims to reduce the number and severity of crashes involving large trucks and buses by ensuring that more drivers enter the workforce with robust safety training.

“This grant allows us to remove financial barriers for veterans and their families while maintaining the highest standards of safety training,” said Amy Jackson, Executive Director of SFCC’s The LearningForce. “We are proud to prepare skilled, safety-focused drivers who are ready to meet the needs of the trucking industry and keep our roadways safe.”

SFCC’s Commercial Driving Academy is a 4-week program teaching theory, pre-trip, range and behind-the-wheel training maneuvers and road skills.  Training is supported by truck-driving simulation to teach manual transmission shifting and educate students of the spatial requirements needed for a large Commercial Motor Vehicle to improve the students’ proficiency and safety. Students earn their Class A CDL license upon successful completion of the course.
