LearningForce – Women’s Self Defense
March 16, 2019, 8:30 am-12:30 pm
State Fair Community College’s The LearningForce is offering an online Community Health Worker (CHW) course that will be from March 4 through June 21 and a Women’s Self-Defense one-day training session on March 9. Both courses are at no cost to participants.
The Community Health Worker online course is for anyone interested in learning about the role of a CHW and for medical assistants, service coordinators and agency staff serving clients who need access to health care. A CHW conducts outreach services for organizations that promote individual and community health.
Topics covered in the class include how to motivate clients and families to set and reach health goals; how to assess clients’ eligibility for services; and how to assist with completing applications and registration forms. Students will learn about community resources and how to work with medical providers to ensure clients have comprehensive and coordinated care.
Tuition is free and funded by the Community Health Worker grant from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Lisa Montgomery, BSN, RN, Health Occupations instructor for the State Fair Career and Technology Center, is the instructor.
Prior to class, students must read and sign the Code of Ethics for CHW. Course materials will be provided to enrolled students.
The Women’s Self-Defense training session will be 9 a.m. to noon March 9 in the Thompson Conference Center in Heckart Science and Allied Health Center on the Sedalia campus. Participants will learn how to replace fear with skills, knowledge and confidence. This training covers mental comprehension as well as functional physical applications. Participants must be at least 15 years of age. There is no cost but advance registration is required. McCarthy Toyota of Sedalia and American Family Insurance, A. Wilt Agency are sponsoring the class.
