❑ Apply for your education benefit 

  • For VA education benefits- Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35, 1606 and 1607, apply online at www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply/.
  • If you have any questions about which benefit to choose call the VA Hotline at 1-888-442-4551.
  • For Military Tuition Assistance (Mil TA), service members should talk to their Education Services Office, Educational Services Officer, or counselor within your military service.

❑ Complete an SFCC Admission Application online

  • Provide your official military transcripts and/or transcripts from other institutions.
  • Provide your placement test scores (ACT, ACCUPLACER, SAT, Guided Self-Placement, etc.) if applicable.
  • Submit your military certification form if you are out of state or a foreign resident.

❑ Apply for Federal Student Aid (studentaid.gov) and SFCC Scholarships

  • Log onto your Experience account and check the Financial Aid section for red flags, review your College Financial Plan and apply for student loans.
  • Check the Financial Aid resource section for scholarship opportunities and applications.
  • Check your student email for messages about your financial aid or scholarships.

❑ Submit Your Certificate of Eligibility And Sign The Memorandum Of Understanding (VA MOU)

  • For VA education benefits submit your Certificate of Eligibility to the Financial Aid and Veteran Services Office or to the Whiteman Air Force Base State Fair office. You can also email your Certificate of Eligibility to veterans@sfccmo.edu.
  • VA education benefit recipients will need to sign and submit a copy of the VA Student MOU. This is available in Financial Aid, by email, and online.
  • For Army and National Guard Tuition Assistance notify the Business Office of your approval and provide your schedule. For Active Duty Air Force, the Business Office will retrieve your information once it has been signed/approved by your Educational Services Officer.

❑ Meet with your Navigator to register for classes.  Who’s my Navigator?

  • A Navigator is your personal resource to help guide you through your program of education and will help you enroll in classes.
  • Log onto your Experience account and on the Home Page select the Starfish icon to see your assigned Navigator and schedule an appointment.
  • Submit your Veteran Certification Form! After registering for classes log into your Experience account and select Academics. Under I need to…select “Submit Veteran Certification Form”. This form will need to be submitted each semester you want to use VA education benefits.

❑ Check your Experience account, Pay My Bill section to see if you have a balance due.

  • If you are receiving education benefits under Chapter 31 (VA VR&E) or Chapter 33 (Post 9/11), the VA will pay your tuition and fees directly to SFCC. Students with Chapter 30, 35, 1606, and 1607 education benefits will be responsible for paying SFCC directly.

  • Chapter 31: Veteran Readiness and Employment
  • Chapter 33: Post-9/11 GI Bill®
    • The Post 9/11 GI Bill®  provides benefits for students who served in the military on active duty for at least 90 aggregate days after September 10, 2001, or if the student was discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days.     • Fry Scholarship: The Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship provides Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to the children and surviving spouses of service members who died in the line of duty while on active duty after September 10, 2001. Eligible beneficiaries attending school may receive up to 36 months of benefits at the 100% level. For further information and to apply visit Fry Scholarship.
  • Chapter 35: Survivors and Dependents Assistance
    • Survivors and Dependents assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition or eligible dependents of veterans who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related condition. Visit Survivors and Dependents Assistance to apply or get more information.
  • Missouri Returning Heroes Act
    • The Missouri Returning Heroes Education Act is a Missouri law that requires public institutions to limit eligible combat veterans’ tuition to $50 per credit hour for undergraduate coursework. Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5, provide a DD-214, and be eligible to vote or registered to vote in Missouri, or be a current resident of Missouri.

  • Tuition Assistance
    • Military Tuition Assistance is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Congress has authorized each service the ability to pay up to 100 percent for the tuition expenses of its members. Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process, and restrictions. This money is normally paid directly to the college by the individual services. If this is the first time using Chapter 30, 31, 33, 35, 1606 and 1607, complete the online application on https://www.va.gov/education/how-to-apply/.  Once you are notified of your eligibility stating your entitlement and type of benefit you will receive, provide a copy of the letter of eligibility or a screen shot of your education benefits listed on your vets.gov, account along with your Member 4 Form DD214 to the Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Service at 3201 West 16th, Sedalia, MO 65301; by fax at (660) 530-5820; or email at veterans@sfccmo.edu.

It is important that you notify the Department of Veteran Affairs of any changes you make to your education plan.  If you decide to change your degree program and you are using Chapter 30, 31, 33, 35, 1606 or 1607 VA education benefits, complete and submit the Change my program/catalog year form on your mySFCC Academics page.  

You will also need to complete the VA Request for Change of Program or Place of Training form (22-1995) or 22-5495 and provide a copy or written notification to the Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Services at 3201 West 16th, Sedalia, MO 65301 or fax at (660) 530-5820 or email to veterans@sfccmo.edu.

 

It is important to know the affect it will make if you decide to drop a class.  Dropping a class may cause some or all of your benefits to be reduced.  In some cases, you may have to pay back SFCC or the VA for the benefit you received.

If you are using Tuition Assistance, you will need to notify your Educational Services Officer or counselor within your unit and the Business office at 3201 West 16th, Sedalia, MO 65301 or fax at (660) 530-7462 or email at busoffice@sfccmo.edu.

Full-time is 12 hours the entire 16 weeks of the fall and spring semesters. Interim courses are considered part of the semester they precede. Full-time in the summer semester is six hours the entire eight weeks.

* If you enroll in courses that start late or end early, your benefits may be affected.

You can find out how much BAH you will receive by visiting www.vets.gov/gi-bill-comparison-tool.

You must be enrolled in greater than half-time each term (seven to 11 credits hours for fall and spring) to receive 50 percent of your BAH. You must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours to receive 100 percent of your BAH.

Yes. If you enroll in all online courses, you are still eligible for BAH as long as your rate of pursuit is greater than half-time (seven or more hours for fall and spring).

However, if you enroll in online skills courses (anything under the 100 level) they will not count as credit hours toward your housing and education benefits.

For Chapter 30, 33, 35, 1606 and 1607, the amount of benefit you receive is based the type of benefit you are receiving as well as the number of credit hours you enroll in each semester.  Enrolling in classes with various beginning and ending dates such as Interim classes, first eight week and second eight week classes may also affect your monthly benefit and when you will receive them. 

For example: if you are enrolled in 6 credits the first eight weeks and 6 credit hours the second eight weeks.  You are considered a full time student, however, you will not receive your housing allowance until you start your second eight week classes.

If you are using Tuition Assistance your tuition will be paid directly to SFCC.

If you are using Chapter 30, 1606 or 1607, you will need to verify your attendance to the VA monthly.  By the last day of every month, you must notify the VA of your attendance by visiting Web Automated Verification of Enrollment website at www.gibill.va.gov/wave/index.do or calling 1-877-823-2378.

If you are currently using your VA Education Benefits at another institution, fill out a 22-1995 (22-5490 for dependents), DD-214 and Certificate of Eligibility form and submit them to Financial Aid and Veteran Service at 3201 West 16th St., Sedalia, MO 65301; fax to (660) 530-5820; or email to veterans@sfccmo.edu.

The Missouri Returning Heroes Education Act requires Missouri public postsecondary institutions to limit eligible combat veterans’ tuition to $50 per credit hour.

Eligibility

  • U.S. veteran status
  • Active service in an armed combat zone, as designated by the U.S. Department of Defense, for more than 30 days since Sept. 11, 2001
  • Missouri resident at time of entrance into the military
  • Honorable discharge from military service (shown on most current DD-214 form)
  • Enrollment in an associate degree program

Maximum Award Amount

  • The award amount is based on current enrollment and other financial assistance.
  • After subtracting all other aid designated for tuition and fees, such as grants and scholarships, any remaining tuition and fees exceeding $50 per credit hour will be waived.

  • Must maintain minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average each semester
