If you’re interested in healthcare and want to make a difference through direct patient care, SFCC’s Phlebotomy course can prepare you to become a skilled phlebotomy technician. You’ll learn how to safely collect and handle blood and other specimens while developing the technical skills, attention to detail, and patient communication skills needed in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and other healthcare settings.

This 16-week course combines online instruction, hands-on laboratory training, and supervised clinical experience to prepare you for the workplace and national certification.

Build Your Future in Phlebotomy

Phlebotomy technicians are important members of the healthcare team. They collect blood specimens used to diagnose illnesses, monitor treatments, and provide healthcare professionals with information that can guide patient care.

At SFCC, you’ll learn the procedures and laboratory techniques needed to perform phlebotomy safely and effectively. Training also emphasizes the patient experience, helping you learn how to explain procedures, answer questions, and help patients feel comfortable throughout the blood collection process.

Students who successfully complete the course are eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification exam. Earning a nationally recognized credential can demonstrate your knowledge and skills to potential employers as you pursue opportunities in hospitals, laboratories, blood donor centers, clinics, and other healthcare environments.

Course Requirements

Phlebotomy is offered as a course at SFCC, but enrollment follows a selective application process similar to other Health Sciences programs. Students must submit the required Phlebotomy application and receive consent from the program coordinator before enrolling.

To successfully complete the course, students must:

  • Receive consent from the program coordinator.
  • Complete the required application process.
  • Complete the 16-week online coursework with a grade of C or higher.
  • Attend one required on-ground, hands-on training day at SFCC’s Sedalia campus.
  • Demonstrate required skills satisfactorily in a laboratory setting.
  • Complete a minimum of 100 successful sticks.
  • Complete 80 to 100 hours of supervised professional practice or an equivalent determined by the program coordinator.
  • Earn at least 75% on the final exam.
  • Complete all required written tests and clinical requirements.
