State Fair Community College’s The LearningForce is offering an online Medical Assisting Review course that will be from July 3 to Aug. 11 and an online Community Health Worker (CHW) course that will be from Aug. 1 to Nov. 17.

The Medical Assisting Review course is for medical assistants with at least one year of work experience as an assistant. The course prepares assistants to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam. Many health care systems require assistants to have CCMA credentials, and those who are certified are likely to earn higher wages.

Cost is $200 for the Medical Assisting Review course. Jill Semau, an experienced CMA, is the instructor.

The Community Health Worker course is for anyone interested in learning about the role of a CHW and for medical assistants, service coordinators and agency staff serving clients who need access to health care. A CHW conducts outreach services for organizations that promote individual and community health.

Topics covered in the class include how to motivate clients and families to set and reach health goals; how to assess clients’ eligibility for services; and how to assist with completing applications and registration forms. Students will learn about available community resources and how to work with medical providers to ensure clients have comprehensive and coordinated care.

Tuition is free and funded by the Community Health Worker grant from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Lisa Montgomery, BSN, RN, Health Occupations instructor for the State Fair Career and Technology Center, is the instructor. To enroll, participants must be over 18 years old and must pass a required background check. After enrolling, students will receive instructions on obtaining a background check and the cost.
