State Fair Community College’s The LearningForce will offer more professional and enrichment courses in October. New this month is a free women’s self-defense class to be held Oct. 20; details are below.

  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A Truck Driving Academy is a four-week program designed to train new truck drivers how to drive, the rules and regulations of the road and how to keep driving logs. It includes about 40 hours of classroom time and 160 hours of driving time. Students must have a CDL permit and pass drug and health screenings before starting. Programs are offered monthly; the next academy begins Oct. 1 in Fielding Technical Center, Room 245. Upon completion, students will be prepared to earn a Class A CDL.   • Yoga classes will meet from 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks beginning Oct. 2 in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. Students should wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat or rug. Cost is $39 for eight sessions; instructor is Irene Renauld.
  • Yogalates, a fusion of yoga and Pilates, will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks beginning Oct. 2 in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. It offers stretching and strengthening of all major muscles and can calm the mind and spirit. Students should wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat. Cost is $39 for eight sessions; instructor is Sue Guffin.

A 15 percent discount is applied if enrolling in three or more yoga or Yogalates sessions at the same time prior to the start of class.

  • Shadow Box Quilt class will meet from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 10, 24 and Nov. 7 and 14 in Davis Multipurpose Center, Room 119. This quilt top is simple to make, uses optical illusion to make boxes appear to be moving and is a good project for using leftover materials. The first 90-minutes class will cover fabric choices and required supplies. The remaining three sessions will last three hours each and require using a sewing machine and hand stitching. Do not purchase fabric or supplies until after the first class. Cost is $69; the instructor is Rebecca Schnakenberg.
  • Motorcycle Basic Rider Course will meet Oct. 12-14 on the Sedalia campus. The class meets from 6-10 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The course is geared for beginning or re-entry riders and has a list of requirements. Cost is $199; instructor is Chuck Buck, certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program. The next rider course will be Oct. 19-21.
  • Introduction to Beekeeping will meet from 6-7:50 p.m. on Thursdays for eight weeks beginning Oct. 11 in the Potter-Ewing Agriculture Building, Room 400. No class will be held on Nov. 22. The course covers basic principles of beekeeping and its role in producing and maintaining the food supply. Students will learn the skills needed to be a hobbyist beekeeper. Cost is $79; instructor is Bruce R. Bird.
  • Medical Assisting Review, an eight-week online course, will start Oct. 17. This course is for people who have at least one year of medical assistant work and want to prepare to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam. A few hours each week will help assistants gain confidence in clinical, general and administrative knowledge. A textbook is required and available in the SFCC Campus Store or at sfccbooks.com. SFCC Medical Assisting program coordinator Jill Semau is the instructor. Cost is $200, and enrollment is limited.
  • Free Women’s Self-Defense course will meet from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 20 in Thompson Conference Center in Heckart. This four-hour training covers mental comprehension as well as functional physical applications. Billy Matheney, a certified professional instructor in self-defense will conduct the class that is sponsored by McCarthy Toyota of Sedalia and American Family Insurance-A. Meriam Wilt Agency. There is no cost to attend but participants must pre-register.
  • Intermediate Country and Western Dance will meet from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays for seven weeks beginning Oct. 23 in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. The course is for dancers who are familiar with basic steps and turns and a continuation of the beginning course. Instructors will introduce intermediate turns and twirls in two-step and waltz, Night Club Two-Step, West Coast Swing, and couple side-by-side dances. Dancers may attend alone or with a partner, but a partner is suggested to do the turns and twirls. Smooth-soled shoes are recommended. Cost is $59; instructors are Mary Donnell-Brown and Travis Goosen.
  • Intermediate Country Line Dance will meet from 7-9 p.m. on Thursdays for seven weeks beginning Oct. 25 in Hopkins Student Center, Room 714. Previous line dance experience or instructor’s consent is required. Dances taught include Slappin Leather, Watermelon Crawl, Boot Scootin’ Boogie, West Coast Shuffle, Waltz Across Texas, Cowboy Cha Cha, and other current dances. Cost is $59; instructor is Mary Donnell-Brown.
