SEDALIA—State Fair Community College’s Metals Technology-Machine Tool Level I program has earned national accreditation from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills Inc. (NIMS) as of Jan. 6.
NIMS accreditation requires that faculty and staff meet stringent quality requirements, which include a program self-audit, the certifying of faculty and students in NIMS national industry credentials and an intensive two-day on-site evaluation. Evaluations are based on a comprehensive facility inspection, observation of student safety habits and a series of in-depth interviews with faculty, administrators and local employers.
Two NIMS evaluators conducted an on-site visit in late fall 2015 and issued above-average ratings in purpose; program features; equipment, tooling and measuring devices; administration; and faculty and instructional staff for SFCC’s Machining Level I and II programs with a focus on milling and lathe operations.
Justin Wright, Metals Technology-Machine Tool program coordinator, said accreditation confirms that students who complete SFCC’s program are learning skills and knowledge that will provide them with excellent career opportunities.
“NIMS accreditation is the highest benchmark for metalworking training programs in the country,” said Wright. “SFCC is committed to providing our students with industry-level training and producing a skilled workforce for the manufacturing industry in our community, state and beyond. I have no doubt our graduates have bright futures.”
According to the NIMS website, the purpose of national accreditation is to improve the quality of training programs in order to build and maintain a globally competitive workforce while providing career opportunities to employees.
