SEDALIA—A total of 126 students obtained High School Equivalency (HSE) certificates this past academic year through the State Fair Community College Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program. They were honored May 14 at graduation exercises in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center on the Sedalia campus.

An HSE certificate is earned by passing high-school level exams in language arts, reading, math, social studies, and science. Program director is Deb Williams. One student working toward HSE certification, Anna Hernandez, Marshall, also became a United States citizen during the year.

Dr. Brent Bates, SFCC’s vice president for Educational and Student Support Services, delivered the graduation message, and Dr. Joanna Anderson, SFCC president, welcomed graduates and guests. Graduates Jonnalea Jenkins, Warrensburg, and Rick Morgan, Boonville, also spoke.

Members of the Sedalia chapter of Altrusa International hosted a reception after the ceremony.

SFCC’s AEL program provides classes at 18 locations in nine counties. In addition to offering HSE preparation classes, some locations also offer free English Language Learner and United States citizenship classes.
