SEDALIA—Several State Fair Community College Theatre Arts students competed for awards and scholarships at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival’s (KCACTF) annual Region 5 event Jan. 17-23 in Minneapolis.

Sophomore Adriana Luffman, Mt. Sterling, and acting partner freshman Curran Bean, Lexington, and freshman Alia Stepney, Columbia, and acting partner freshman Hali Still, Whiteman Air Force Base, made the first round cut in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition. Almost 350 students competed in the first round, and only 64 were selected to move on to the semifinals, which ranked Luffman, Bean, Stepney, and Still in the top 20 percent of student actors in the region.

Other SFCC students nominated to compete for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship were Ethan Yazell, Sedalia, and partner Kayla Rains, Windsor; Sheridan Rohaus, Deepwater, and partner Aaron Rodgers, Osage Beach; Dalton Grafton, Lexington, and partner Still; Brendan Twenter, Boonville, and partner Jessi Rigdon, Sedalia.

Sophomore Colton Graham, Owensville, competed in the Stage Management competition.

SFCC’s Plywood Players stage crew members Rohaus, Rodgers, Rigdon, and Client Fergason, Lexington, competed in a stage crew showdown that appraised scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, and allied crafts.

During the festival 120 students auditioned for roles in several 10-minute plays. Luffman was selected to perform in “Boxed Wine.”

Two former SFCC Theatre Arts students earned awards and scholarships at the festival. Kacy Barta, Monett, placed second in the Stage Directors and Choreographers Directing Initiative and in Student Dramaturgy. Daniel Parman, Harrisonville, and partner Nellie Maple won the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship for Region 5 and will compete at the national festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in April. Both Barta and Parman attend the University of Central Missouri.

The KCACTF is a national theatre program dedicated to the improvement of collegiate theatre. The regional event featured theatre arts programs from undergraduate and graduate schools in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
