SEDALIA—As part of a commitment to the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors, State Fair Community College officials will conduct a test of its emergency notification systems on Friday, Oct. 2.

“Every semester, we test our warning systems,” said Dr. Joe Gilgour, dean of Student and Academic Support Services, who coordinates the college’s safety and security program.

“The system includes indoor and outdoor loudspeakers located in public areas and hallways on the Sedalia, Boonville, Clinton, and Lake of the Ozarks campuses, and text messages, emails and social media postings. SFCC Alert, our text/email notification system, is still a new tool for us, and we want to ensure it’s working correctly and to increase awareness of emergency and weather notification procedures with students, employees and the community.

“The following week, Oct. 5 through Oct. 9, the college will conduct fire drills on all campuses,” said Gilgour.

During the test, a message will be broadcast over the loudspeakers, and students, employees, and community members who have signed up to receive text and/or email notifications will receive a message explaining that the notification is a test of the system and not a real emergency. Test messages will also be posted to SFCC’s Facebook and Twitter accounts and on www.sfccmo.edu/alertupdates, a web page for the public to stay informed to any emergency situation.

SFCC annually updates emergency evacuation plans for buildings on all campuses.  Each building has evacuation procedures detailed in the building’s emergency action plan kept updated by the college’s safety and security program coordinator. Faculty and staff also receive annual training to ensure they are prepared to deal with emergency situations.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members can visit www.sfccmo.edu/sfccalert for instructions on opting in for emergency text messages and how to update their contact information. This website also contains a list of other tools SFCC uses to notify students, employees and the public about emergency and weather situations.

While mass text and email messages are part of SFCC’s emergency and weather notification system, campus closures due to weather will still be reported at www.sfccmo.edu under Current News.
