SEDALIA—State Fair Community College will honor health information professionals during the 27th annual Health Information Professionals (HIP) Week April 3-9. This year’s theme is “Accurate Information, Quality Care.”

Health information professionals play a key role in the effective management of health data and medical records needed to deliver quality health care to the public.

Beverly Marquez, Health Information Technology (HIT) coordinator for SFCC, said health information management is important to building quality health care and is an exciting and growing field.

“Information management professionals no longer work solely in medical records,” said Marquez. “We are involved in all areas of health care where information is utilized. In a time when health care has become dependent on data, the HIP knows how to obtain and analyze that data to improve health care delivery.

“This year’s HIP Week theme reflects our goals to equip students with the skills needed to provide the right information to the right person at the right time for better care.”

SFCC’s two-year HIT Associate of Applied Science degree program teaches students how to maintain the security, integrity, confidentiality, and availability of medical records in all types of health care settings.

The college’s Professional Certificate in Medical Coding teaches the basic skills needed for entry-level positions and quick entry into the workforce. Employment opportunities are available in medical and dental offices, hospitals, insurance companies, laboratories, medical supply companies, and other health care-related organizations.

Courses are offered online and clinicals are held at various locations.

The health care industry is expected to generate 3.2 million new jobs by 2018, based on projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. An estimated 6,000 new health information management positions will need to be filled each year to accommodate industry growth and attrition.
