BOONVILLE—Students who attend fall classes at State Fair Community College-Boonville will have more space in which to learn and collaborate when the college moves into additional renovated space in the Science Hall on The Kemper Campus. Classes will still be held in the Library Learning Center next door.

The expansion will take place in three phases over three years. The first phase, expected be complete by fall, will add two classrooms; a computer lab with 15 computers and a lab storage room; a science lab for chemistry, anatomy and physiology classes; a faculty workroom; and three offices for faculty and navigator advising. The whole building will have wireless access.

Phase two will add a student lounge, three classrooms, two offices, and a faculty breakroom. Two more classrooms will be added in phase three.

The renovation is being funded by an economic development grant and the city of Boonville to address the growing need for skilled computer technicians in the local workforce and to prepare for offering more certificates and degrees in the future.

Starting this fall, SFCC-Boonville students can enroll in an 18-credit-hour Skills Certificate in Programming that can be completed in one semester. The skills certificate can lead to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Information Systems (CIS) with Emphasis in Computer Programming.

“Now is a great time for students interested in computers to pursue a programming certificate,” said Kinsey Feldmann Dona, SFCC-Boonville director. “The job market for programming technicians is thriving. The Skills Certificate in Programming will give students a fast track option to quickly gain the skills they need to enter a booming career.”

Courses required for the skills certificate include Introduction to CIS, Database Management, Visual Basic, Programming in C#, JAVA, and Systems Analysis. One class is online and the rest will be offered in the evening.

Students who earn the Skills Certificate in Programming can pursue careers as computer operators and specialists, operations technicians and computer maintenance technicians. Beginning annual salaries range from $21,000 to $39,500.

Enrollment is now underway at SFCC-Boonville. The summer semester starts June 1 and ends July 27 and offers 17 classes. More than 60 day and evening classes in 16-week or eight-week sessions will be offered this fall.
