SEDALIA—State Fair Community College students won national honors at the Post-secondary Agriculture Students (PAS) national conference March 16-19 in Kansas City.
Eighteen students participated in mock interviews; attended workshops; developed leadership, citizenship, critical thinking, and problem solving skills; competed in skills contests; and networked with students and instructors from college agriculture programs across the country.
“Our students were exemplary representatives of State Fair Community College,” said Brad Driskill, Agriculture program coordinator. “They competed against students in agriculture programs from both two-year colleges and four-year universities and won several national honors.”
Honorees included:
• Sam Sudbrock, Centralia, first place in Career Planning – Horticulture, Environmental and Natural Resources
• Erin Robinson, Cole Camp, second place in Career Planning – Ruminant Animal Systems
• Ryan Voss, Iberia, second place in Career Progress – Non-Ruminant Animal Systems
• Alexandra England, Rocky Mount, third place in Career Progress – Plant Systems
• Landon Adams, Holden, second place in Employment interview – Agribusiness Administration
• Sudbrock and partner Gloria Marotto from Spokane Community College, third place in Ornamental Horticulture Specialist – Floriculture
Alex Haun, Holden, who graduated from SFCC in May 2015 with an AAS degree in Agriculture, was installed as national 2016-2017 PAS president. Haun, who attends the University of Central Missouri, will lead the national PAS officer team; guide the national PAS Board of Directors meetings; speak at chapter and state PAS events; and promote post-secondary agriculture education across the country including the National Association for Agriculture Educators Conference and the National FFA Convention.
Before the conference, students toured the Claas LEXION combine assembly plant in Omaha and Cargill Meat Solutions and a privately owned feedlot operation in Schuyler, Nebraska.
Driskill, Instructor Dr. Dana Gillig and Agriculture Student Services Navigator Jessica Wingerter accompanied the students.
