State Fair Community College’s Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program has been recognized by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) with an Outstanding Performance Award for the 2024–2025 school year.

SFCC’s AEL program was one of only six in Missouri and one of 28 total programs statewide to receive the distinction. Programs earning the award met or exceeded all five federal performance measures, demonstrating excellence in instruction, student achievement, and workforce preparation.

SFCC’s AEL program surpassed statewide targets in every performance category, including:

  • Measurable Skill Gain: 66.67% (target 62%)
  • Second-Quarter Employment: 63.5% (target 44.7%)
  • Fourth-Quarter Employment: 58.6% (target 48.8%)
  • Median Earnings: $7,119 (target $5,480)

“I’m incredibly proud of my team for earning the Outstanding Performance Award; a true testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for helping students succeed,” said April Godwin, director of Adult Education and Literacy. “This recognition celebrates not only our team’s excellence, but also the determination and success of our amazing adult learners who inspire us every day.”

The AEL program provides educational opportunities for adult learners seeking to earn their GED/HiSET diplomas, improve literacy and math skills, or learn English as a second language. Each student begins with a pre-test to identify learning goals and create an individualized plan. Success is tracked through skill gains, credential attainment, and workforce outcomes.

“Adult Education plays a transformative role in our education system, empowering individuals to rewrite their stories, strengthen communities, and build brighter futures,” said Godwin.
