{"id":37,"date":"2015-11-13T12:23:54","date_gmt":"2015-11-13T12:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sfccmo.edu\/offices-services\/offices-services\/career-services\/career-development-resources\/interviewing\/"},"modified":"2026-06-30T13:27:33","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T19:27:33","slug":"interviews","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.sfccmo.edu\/offices-services\/career-services\/career-development-resources\/interviews\/","title":{"rendered":"Interviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">When it comes to job interviews, first impressions are crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips to help you.<\/p>\n<h2>Before Your Interview<\/h2>\n<p>You probably know the basics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn all you can about the company<\/li>\n<li>Develop effective interview skills and <em>practice<\/em> them<\/li>\n<li>Anticipate interview questions and how you\u2019ll answer them<\/li>\n<li>Bring copies of your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 for the employer<\/li>\n<li>Schedule a mock interview with Career Services<\/li>\n<li>Arrive early<\/li>\n<li>Dress professionally for the career you are pursuing; this does not always mean a suit! Wear clothing that is 1 step above what that job would require<\/li>\n<li>Make eye contact and shake hands<\/li>\n<li>Bring a pen! You may want to take notes so you can ask questions at the end of the interview.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>During Your Interview<\/h2>\n<p>Employers are human. Studies show they\u2019ll make critical decisions about you very quickly, and they rarely hire on merit alone. Yes, they want to be sure you have the skills and ability to do the job\u2014but they also will be looking at other qualities, known as soft skills.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personality<\/li>\n<li>Enthusiasm<\/li>\n<li>Confidence<\/li>\n<li>Communication skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>After Your Interview<\/h2>\n<p>Thank your interviewers personally; thank them via email as soon as you get home; and follow up with a written thank you note to each person who interviewed you. We can\u2019t emphasize this enough. If you and another applicant both seem equally qualified, the one who sends the thank you will have an edge.
