DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is showing now until December 15. \n“Particle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated” is a groundbreaking exhibition featuring 45 artists from across the globe who incorporate paper pulp and organic fibers into their clay. The artists choose paperclay for its adaptability\, tensile strength\, translucency\, and ecological and sustainable characteristics. The medium also increases freedom of expression for the artists\, who reveal a breadth of technique\, concept\, and form. The works divide between figural and structural abstraction\, with a few flirting with ceramics’ utilitarian traditions. The participating artists address issues of sustainability\, social engagement\, environmental concerns\, and issues facing a global contemporary culture. The artists include some of the best-known early paper clay innovators as well members of subsequent generations\, and come from ten countries on five continents. Through its embrace of new materials and new inspirations\, Particle & Wave opens a conversation that encompasses innovation\, creativity\, and connection.\n“Particle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated” is organized by The International Paper Clay Exhibition Project\, and curated by Peter Held.

SUMMARY:Rebecca Hutchinson: Tranquil Bloom
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is being shown until December 15\, 2019 \nIn conjunction with the exhibition “Particle & Wave: PaperClay Illuminated\,” Rebecca Hutchinson (whose work is included in that show) will construct a site-specific installation in the Daum Museum’s Scott Gallery.\nHutchinson’s sculptural assemblages are influenced by ecosystem dynamics and environmental concerns. Although her installations do not replicate nature\, they reference the nesting and colonization of insects and birds\, the search for space by plants\, and massed floral motifs found on antique textiles. Hutchinson uses paperclay made from up-cycled materials (used clothing\, paper\, burlap) and employs a variety of techniques\, including hand building\, slip trailing\, dipping\, layering\, and cutting. Her individual paperclay components are placed on armatures woven mostly of natural materials\, like willow\, and might hang on the wall\, depend from the ceiling\, or accumulate on the floor. The forms are built with both fired and non-fired clay elements. Hutchinson’s work bridges the disciplines of sculpture and ceramics and offers a fresh look at possibilities within each field. \nRebecca Hutchinson has employed paperclay as part of her ceramics practice for over 20 years. She is a professor of ceramics at the University of Massachusetts\, Dartmouth\, exhibits nationally and internationally\, and has received numerous residencies\, commissions\, and awards.

DESCRIPTION:The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art at State Fair Community College will present special evening events and extended museum hours on four Thursdays in May through August. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 23\, June 27\, July 25\, and Aug. 22. Events will begin at 6 p.m. and are free to the public. \nThe final Summer Nights event on Aug. 22 features Spofest\, a community of area poets\, writers and musicians who will share their talents in recitations and song. Among the readers will be the current Missouri Poet Laureate Aliki Barnstone. Besides being a writer\, she is a translator\, critic\, editor\, and visual artist. She is the author of eight books of poetry; the most recent is titled “Dwelling.” Her first book of poems\, “The Real Tin Flower\,” was published when she was 12 years old; she is Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Missouri (source:alikibarnstone.com/bio).
