SUMMARY:Summer Nights at the Daum: Summer Opening
DESCRIPTION:A picture of the Summertime Blues installation that opens 6 p.m. June 28 at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the State Fair Community College Sedalia campus.\nThe community is invited to the opening of the Matt Rahner: Fair Pictures exhibit in the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art’s Scott Gallery at 6 p.m. June 28 on the Sedalia campus. The exhibit\, which will close Sept. 2\, is the second Summer Nights at the Daum event and is free. \nRahner\, the 2017 Missouri State Fair artist-in residence\, turned his lens not on the prize-winning livestock\, baked goods or homegrown produce but on a bumper-crop of fair attendees. He compiled a series of candid portraits and fair vignettes that encourages speculation\, conversation and recognition. \nRahner\, assistant art professor at Missouri Valley College in Marshall\, states\, “I am constantly seeking out found situations that possess an inherent psychological complexity.” \nA photograph from Matt Rahner’s Fair Pictures exhibit that opens 6 p.m. June 28 at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art on the State Fair Community College Sedalia campus.\nAs a native of the Rust Belt and the Midwest\, Rahner is interested in themes related to the American experience\, landscape and traditions of documentary photography. His work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally more than 18 times over the past three years. Rahner’s work has been awarded by Dominic Molon\, Contemporary Arts Curator of the RISD Museum\, and by Anne Lyden\, International Photography Curator at the National Galleries of Scotland and featured in the Genevieve Gulder Gallery\, in Kansas City; the Bingham Gallery\, in Columbia; and in the Elder Gallery in Lincoln\, Nebraska. \nIn addition\, the Daum will open another exhibit in the Freed Gallery\, Summertime Blues\, which features blue artwork from the Daum’s permanent collection. Tom Piché\, museum director\, will talk about the significance of the selected artwork and the artists who created the pieces. \nTwo more Summer Nights at the Daum will be held July 26 and Aug. 23. Events will begin at 6 p.m. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. \nFor more information\, call (660) 530-5888 or visit www.daummuseum.org.

SUMMARY:Summer Nights at the Daum - May
DESCRIPTION:The Daum Museum of Contemporary Art at State Fair Community College will present four special evening events and extended hours on the fourth Thursday of May through August. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 24\, June 28\, July 26\, and Aug. 23. Events will begin at 6 p.m. and are free to the public. \nFor the first Summer Nights event at 6 p.m. May 24\, the Daum Museum will host Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey (KCFAA) in a production of Setting the Stage in the Stauffacher Theatre\, on the Sedalia campus. \nSetting the Stage is a multimedia celebration of African-American dance woven into the broader tapestry of American history. The program highlights the legacies of pioneering African-American choreographers who helped advance modern dance\, artists like Alvin Ailey and Katherine Dunham. Tyrone Aiken\, KCFAA chief artistic officer\, developed and choreographed the production. \nKCFAA is the second home of New York’s Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. KCFAA furthers Alvin Ailey’s vision of making dance accessible to all people by presenting an Alvin Ailey dance company every year and by providing arts education programming to the Kansas City community. KCFAA uses the art of dance as a vehicle to improve knowledge\, increase self-esteem\, enhance critical thinking skills\, and encourage positive role models and smart life choices. \nAlvin Ailey (1931-1989) was an American choreographer and activist who is credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African-American participation in 20th century concert dance. His New York City-based dance group\, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater\, founded in 1958\, continues Ailey’s vision by performing important works from the past and commissioning new additions to its repertoire. Alvin Ailey first brought his dance company to perform in Kansas City in 1968. Such was the response of the Kansas City community to his company’s work that Ailey\, contemplating making a second home for his dance theatre in Los Angeles\, decided to make it in Kansas City instead. KCFAA was founded in 1984. \nFor more information\, call (660) 530-5888 or visit www.daummuseum.org.
