State Fair Career and Technology Center (CTC) student Trent Waibel, a senior at Lincoln R-2 High School, has won the Region IV 2017 Breaking Traditions award for students enrolled in a career-technical education program that is nontraditional for his or her gender.

Waibel, a student in the CTC Early Childhood Careers program, received the award April 3 on State Fair Community College’s Sedalia campus. Janet Bagby, regional college and career consultant, presented Waibel with a plaque and certificate. He also received a scholarship from the Missouri STEM Foundation and a $300 SFCC scholarship.

CTC Early Childhood Careers Instructor Dawn Macklin nominated Waibel, who plans to study early childhood education at SFCC.

The Breaking Traditions Awards are an annual recognition of outstanding nontraditional career education students and the educators and employers who support them. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Office of College and Career Readiness, sponsors Breaking Traditions. Nontraditional students are defined as those studying for careers that are traditionally chosen by the opposite gender.
