Austin Thompson, a maintenance technician at Inter-State Studio in Sedalia, has received a U.S. Department of Labor Apprenticeship Certificate in Industrial Electrical Maintenance through State Fair Community College’s Apprenticeship Program.
Thompson joined Inter-State Studio two years ago as a maintenance technician apprentice. Since then, he has advanced to a full technician role, completing extensive on-the-job training and coursework through SFCC’s program.
Industrial maintenance is a fast-growing field with high demand across the manufacturing industry. Facilities rely on skilled technicians to maintain complex equipment and ensure efficient operations. These professionals are trained to inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and realign mechanical and hydraulic components, all while contributing to quality improvement and cost efficiency.
“These technicians perform critical tasks—from repairing and calibrating machines to troubleshooting automated systems,” said Rochelle Hockett, SFCC director of Career Services. “Their role is essential to keeping production moving.”
SFCC offers apprenticeships in several high-demand areas, including Industrial Electrical Maintenance, Welding, Industrial Robotics Technician, Engineering Design, and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC). These programs give students a pathway to earn while they learn through hands-on training and technical coursework.
