Welcome Back Bash 2007
It started four years ago with just eight teams. Now it has grown to 32 teams, and 118 participants. The Welcome Back Bash, hosted at the Fred E Davis Multipurpose Center Thursday night, has many different purposes.
"We want the students to have a good experience while they are here on campus at State Fair and to get to know other students on campus. We also want our faculty and staff to get to know our students. It's an opportunity to get together in the fall, and meet, mingle and have a little fun competition as well," said Kevin Bucher, Multipurpose Center Director.
This year's event consisted of 13 different stations. The stations had all different types of games. The participants enjoyed everything from Frisbee golf to Trivial Pursuit. Teams were awarded points based on their performances in each event. The top three teams were awarded prizes. Every participant received a T-shirt and free food.
Students varied in their choices for favorite games. "I would have to say the scooter race. It was fun, because we fell off like 500 times," said Vanessa Koonce.
"My favorite parts of the Bash... was the bowling… because it was easy points to win for your team," said Christopher McDonald. Along with the competition students were able to meet new people and renew old acquaintances. " I've met a lot of new people. It was nice to have something like this going on for the school," said McDonald.
An event such as this takes a lot of planning and effort from many people. "We try to make sure the games they play are challenging and at the same time fun. We have to really look at our clientele. We have to make sure that everyone can participate. Some people are better in certain events than others. We tried to make sure there is an event for everyone who participates, to have some success and have a good time," said Bucher.
“One, I want to thank all of our volunteer workers. Without all of our volunteer helpers and work-study helpers, this event would not happen. We try to use it as a retention tool as well. The more things you can have for your students while they enjoy their stay at your college, often times they come back and speak very highly of it. We try to use our gym for that purpose. We want the gym to be accessible to all our students. We want them to have a good time while they're here. We use this event to get the semester off on the right track," said Bucher.
"It was fun. It was nice to have, and I hope they do it again next year," says McDonald.
