Admission and Enrollment Q&A
Q. How can students request information about SFCC?
A. Students interested in receiving information about SFCC may call (660) 530-5833 or visit our Future Students Web page.
Q. What is required to get started at SFCC?
A. In most cases, there are only four requirements to get started at SFCC. They are to submit an SFCC application for admission, an official high school transcript or GED documentation, a placement test score, and to pay the application fee of $25. For more on Admission to SFCC, click here.
Q. What does it take to get enrolled for classes?
A. After submitting the required admission materials, students will receive a letter of acceptance. As soon as it is appropriate, they will be scheduled to meet with an advisor for one-on-one advising, to register for classes and to take the College Student Inventory. The final step is to attend a New Student Orientation.
Q. How can students pay for college?
A. Each semester your tuition and fees are due and payable to the college by the posted Obligation Date. The Business Office will accept cash, check, money order, MasterCard, VISA, Discover, or approved financial aid such as grants and loans or A+ tuition assistance. Grants, loans and A+ tuition assistance require completing a FAFSA form and usually takes four to six weeks to process, so applying early is important. Students may also apply for SFCC scholarships. Students are also welcome to take advantage of the FACTS interest-free monthly payment plan option—for specific information you may pick up a FACTS brochure in Students Services or view the Student Payment Plan link on the SFCC Web site.
Q. What is a placement test and how is it used?
A. SFCC requires new students to have a standardized college entrance test, or placement test, on file. Students may submit ACT, SAT, ASSET or COMPASS scores. The COMPASS test is offered through the
Testing
Center on campus; the initial test is given at no charge. This placement testing can be taken up to three times in a semester at a cost of $10 per retake. You must wait 24 hours before retaking a placement test. The test results will be utilized to determine placement in Math and English courses. SFCC does not have a minimum test score that students must attain in order to be accepted for admission. If you start the math or English sequence of classes at SFCC and do not pass a class with at least a C grade, you cannot take a placement test to “test out” of the class and advance to the next level. Test accommodations are arranged for those who have documented disabilities. For special testing accommodations, students should contact the Access Office at (660) 530-5832.
Q. Is a placement test needed for students transferring from another college?
A. If a student has previous college credit in math and English, this requirement may be waived. Students should submit an official copy of any college transcripts.
Q. What kinds of degrees does SFCC offer?
A. There are lots of majors for students to choose from at SFCC, but they all fall into one of three categories: 1.) Professional Certificate - one year program of study for technical fields 2.) Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree - two year program of study for technical programs 3.) Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree - two year program designed to transfer to 4-year school.
Q. What is the last day to withdraw from class?
A. For the regular 16-week fall 2007 term, the last day to withdraw is November 13, prior to 5 p.m. For the regular 16-week spring 2008 term, the last day to withdraw is April 16, prior to 5 p.m. Last dates to withdraw from other parts-of-term are included in the calendar portion of the Student Handbook.
Q. How do I add or drop a class?
A. A student may change his or her class schedule until the published date in the Student Handbook on the STAR system or by filling out a Petition to Change Registration form available in Student Services Office in Hopkins. After the class meets through the end of the first week, a student may use the same form to add a class, but the action requires a signature of the instructor on the form. The Petition to Change Registration form may also be used to drop a class. That action requires signature of the instructor. The forms must be turned into Student Services office. If a student fails to submit the form to student services the student will officially stay on the class roll as an active student and potentially receive a final grade of an "F." Since dropping a class may affect financial aid, students receiving financial aid who wish to drop a class are urged to contact the Financial Aid Office first.
Q. Can I get a refund if I drop or withdraw from a class or classes?
A. Courses (16-week, 8-week, first 6-week, first 4-week) must be dropped by completing a drop/add or complete withdrawal form in Student Services or with a site coordinator. One hundred percent (100%) refunds are given the first week of term or part-of-term; after that, no refund is given.
Requests for exceptions to these refund dates due to unusual circumstances must be presented in writing to the Vice President for Student Services for consideration.
Q. How do I withdraw from class?
A. If it is necessary to withdraw from the college (drop all of your classes for a semester, session or part-of-term), you can do so before the end of the 12th week of a 16-week semester or the sixth week of an 8-week session and receive a grade of 'W' on your SFCC transcript. Check in the Registrar's Office for part-of-term withdrawal specifics. Last dates to withdraw are published in the current Student Handbook Planner and the weekly Student Bulletin. After the last date to withdraw, you cannot withdraw and you must remain in the classes until the end of the semester/session. If a student fails to submit the form to Student Services or officially withdraw, the student will stay on the class roll as an active student and potentially receive a final grade of an "F." The student will typically be asked to discuss the withdrawal with a counselor or financial aid advisor before the withdrawal is processed.
To officially withdraw you can:
