Articulated Credit
What is articulated credit? Articulated credit allows high school students to receive college credit for technical courses they completed while in high school. The articulation process eliminates the need for duplication of courses at the college level.
What is the cost for articulated credit? Articulated credit is absolutely free! Students may take up to 15 credit hours of articulated credit; saving up to $1,455.00
What kinds of courses count toward articulated credit? There are numerous opportunities to earn articulated credit. Generally, courses that apply to technical degrees/certificates are eligible for articulated credit. Some examples include agriculture, building trades, child development, computer information, automotive technology, business technology, health occupations and marine technology. Whether these courses are taken at an area technical center (TC) or a comprehensive high school, an articulation agreement needs to be signed by the education institution and SFCC.
What is an articulation agreement? A signed articulation agreement indicates the TC or high school is successfully teaching at least 80% or more of the course competencies required by SFCC. This ensures students are learning the core objectives of the class and will be successful in subsequent classes once they transfer to SFCC. SFCC allows up to 15 hours of articulated credit; one full semester of free tuition!
Do students have to attend SFCC to receive the credit? Yes, students who enroll at SFCC within one year of high school graduation can receive credit for the articulated course(s). Upon enrolling, contact your counselor at your high school or vocational-technical school where you took the course(s), this will begin the process necessary to verify the articulated credit with SFCC. Ultimately, that course will be indicated as a ‘cr’ (credit) on the student’s first semester transcript. This enables a student to enroll in the next sequence of courses rather than repeat coursework they completed in high school. In addition, once transcripted, these courses may be transferable to other colleges.
Can any student receive articulated credit? High school students must earn a grade of ‘B’ or better in all courses of the technical program they have selected. In addition, students must complete a ‘Recommendation for Articulated Credit’ form and enroll at SFCC within one year of high school graduation.
What are the benefits of articulated credit? Not only do students save up to $1,455.00 in tuition/fees, and eliminate the need to repeat courses at the college level; students who articulate courses are also eligible for an articulation scholarship! TC’s with established articulation agreements with SFCC may award two $720 scholarships per year. The scholarship must be used the year following graduation from the technical school, and is renewable for up to three additional semesters, awarding $720 each semester. Interested students need to complete an articulation scholarship application, enroll in 12 credit hours or more per semester and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above.
