Who is My Advisor?

All degree-seeking students are assigned an advisor during their first semester.

You can find your advisor's name by logging into mySTAR, and clicking on your STUDENT tab. The advisor's name and your degree information will be found under "Academic Profile".   If there is no advisor assigned, you should contact the Registrar's office to be certain that your degree and major are listed correctly.  They will assign an advisor at that time and can give you the contact information.

If the major shown on mySTAR is incorrect, please contact the Registrar's office to change your major and have a new advisor assigned.

Advising Responsibilities

The process of academic advising involves joint responsibility between advisors and students.  Advisors can help students clarify their goals and make decisions about their future but it is the student's responsibility to set goals, select classes, and ultimately make educational decisions. Read on for more information about the responsibilities of you and your advisor.

Student Responsibilities

  • Know and understand general education and degree requirements and SFCC policies and procedures. You can find this information in the college catalog, in the Student Handbook/Planner, from your advisor, and throughout this web site.
  • Schedule appointments early during registration periods and arrive on time and prepared for the appointment.  There may be up to a 3-week wait before you can see your advisor so plan ahead!
  • When you arrive for your advising appointment, bring your Degree Worksheet and your tentative 4-6 Semester plan along with a tentative list of courses you plan to take.
  • Keep all scheduled appointments. If you are unable to make your appointment, it is a courtesy to call so others may have that appointment time.
  • Immediately consult your advisor if you begin to experience academic difficulty.
  • Accept responsibility for your decisions.
  • Follow through with appropriate action after meeting with your advisor and complete all necessary paperwork.
  • For transfer students, select a major and transfer school as quickly as possible and become familiar with the requirements needed for that major as well as transfer policies at the institution to which you plan to transfer.

Advisor Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate information about educational options, degree requirements, and SFCC policies and procedures in a courteous and student-friendly manner.
  • Help students develop an educational plan that will meet his or her academic and career goals.
  • Provide information and referrals to campus and community resources.
  • Help students accept responsibility for their own actions and decisions.
  • Assist students to clarify their values and goals.
