The newest building on campus, the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art opened in January 2002. With 20,000 square feet of space that includes the Goddard Gallery in the Stauffacher Center, the Daum Museum contains nine galleries devoted to the exhibition of art from the last 30 years. A three-story atrium wall gives visitors a preview of the interior space and its contents, a stunning focal point during evening hours. A floating, cantilevered stairway connects the three stories, enabling visitors to actually view galleries from five levels. Cathedral Violet Chandelier, an exquisite piece by internationally known glass artist Dale Chihuly is the centerpiece of the 33-foot museum atrium.
The permanent collection, a gift from the museum's benefactor, Dr. Harold F. Daum, is comprised of abstract paintings, drawings, prints, works in clay and sculpture created since the mid-20th century by many of America's most celebrated artists. The museum presents a full calendar of changing exhibits in multiple gallery spaces as well as selected works from the collection in the permanent galleries. Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.; admission is free. Guided tours are available upon request.
