Dual Credit
What is dual enrollment?
Dual enrollment, also known as dual credit, is a course that is taken by a high school student that counts toward both high school credit and college credit. It is generally taught during the normal school day, and by a high school teacher in that school or one of the surrounding high schools via interactive television (ITV) or online. It's a great way to get a jump start on college courses while still attending high school.
What kind of courses are generally offered for dual credit?
Many high schools offer College Algebra, English Composition, Microcomputer Applications (a computer course), History, Government, Public Speaking, Psychology, Sociology, Biology with lab and Chemistry with lab course
s.
Can any high school student take dual credit courses?
Dual credit is available to junior and senior level students who have a grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale, or 7.0 on an 11.0 scale. Math or English courses require an appropriate placement score before enrollment.
How much does it cost to take a dual credit class?
Dual credit students pay $70 per credit hour, or $210 for a three credit hour course. Biology with lab and Chemistry with lab are five credit hour courses ($350). Dual credit courses use the same curriculum and textbook(s) as on campus classes and students receive a college transcript upon course completion. Most dual credit courses are taught at the high school or local Career and Technical Center and are taught by a qualified high school teacher.
Can a high school student attend classes on any of the SFCC campuses for dual credit?
Yes, sometimes there isn't enough interest for a particular class at the high school, and the school gives permission for students to attend classes at SFCC and receive high school credit. Or, some students take advantage of summer offerings at SFCC for dual credit. A student needs to make sure the high school has agreed to accept the class as dual credit.
How would a student or parent find out about dual credit opportunities at their school?
Talk to your high school counselor or principal to see if your school has a signed Dual Enrollment Agreement with SFCC or another area college. Some high schools offer classes from two or more colleges. If you find your high school doesn't offer dual credit courses, but is interested in learning more about dual credit, contact our Extended Campus Office at (660) 596-7497.
