The Safe Transportation of Students

---This session will review the key elements and components of a school bus safety program. The presentation will review accident statistics and trends in school transportation and the loading/unloading zone.  The session will also cover school bus specific safety management techniques to include: student discipline, an overview of defensive driving, crisis management, security and driver attitude.  The session will also discuss and review the most common law suits in school transportation and methods to avoid them.

 

Alan Schmitt, Missouri United School Insurance Council (MUSIC)

Alan manages and coordinates the loss control services to MUSIC (Missouri United School Insurance Council) a group of over 475 school districts within Missouri.  He has been working with schools for 26 years.  One of my primary job functions is to provide safety training to school staff and bus drivers.

Managing Student Behavior and Driving Distracted

Driving distracted can take away a school bus drivers focus and attention from the safe delivery of students.  Be prepared to learn effective strategies for managing, documenting and changing negative student behavior to ensure a safe ride for everyone.

 

Shirley Francis, Missouri Association for Pupil Transportation (MAPT)

Shirley Francis has 40 plus years’ experience working in the pupil transportation industry starting as a school bus driver and retiring as the Director of Transportation.  Ms. Francis had the unique opportunity to serve 2500 students with special needs for the Special School District of St. Louis County. Since retiring in December 2003 she has worked as a Pupil Transportation Consultant with Access Management Group, Inc now renamed BAFC Financial Dynamics, Inc.
