Do you like the idea of working with K-12 students along side a teacher or becoming a teacher someday?
Earning an Associate of Applied Science degree in Paraprofessional Educator at SFCC is a great place to start building your teaching knowledge and skills. With this degree, you will meet current state and federal regulations for working as a paraprofessional educator or substitute teacher in any classroom within a pre-K-12 school setting.
Growing job opportunities
According to the American Federation of Teachers, some 980,000 paraprofessional educators now work as:
- Teacher aids or assistants
- Instructional aids or assistants
- Special education assistants
- Preschool or early childhood assistants
- Bilingual assistants
- Library assistants
The demand for paraprofessional educators has increased over the past few decades as educational reforms have been implemented to address the diverse needs of students. Often times paraprofessionals move into the teaching ranks thus opening positions for newcomers.
Getting an AAS in Paraprofessional Educator not only helps you reach a short-term educational goal but also can be a springboard toward a bachelor's degree in education. SFCC has agreements with four-year colleges and universities that ensure credit earned here transfers to those institutions. Specific agreements are in effect with Central Methodist University (CMU), Drury University (DU), University of Central Missouri (UCM) and University of Missouri (UM). CMU and UCM also offer dual admission through SFCC.
