State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunner Alecia Cooley will have the opportunity to play with and against some of the nation’s best NJCAA women’s basketball players this summer. The Evanston, Ill. native has been selected to participate in the 2014 NJCAA Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association All-Star Event on July 24-27 in Niceville, Fla. at Northwest Florida State College. The top 40 sophomores were selected to participate by a committee from the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Selection was also based on stats and coaches’ comments.
"The participants have a banquet together shortly after they arrive at the event,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “Then they will start having position specific workouts and drills. The players are rated and then divided into four teams. They try to get the teams as equal as possible. Each team will play two games as part of the event.”
Cooley was named Second-Team All-Region 16. She helped lead her team to a 21-9 record and the program’s fourth appearance at the NJCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship. Cooley was her team’s third leading scorer and leading rebounder averaging 11.4 points and seven rebounds per contest. She also led the team in blocked shots per game with 2.2.
“It will be nice to see Alecia play in the event,” said Bucher. “She’s been looking really good this spring. She’s been working out really hard; hopefully, she continues that this summer and really has a great workout down at the All-Star Event.”
