Lady Roadrunners Lose Heartbreaker
The Lady Roadrunners saw their memorable season come to an end March 17 when they fell to the 17th-seeded Western Nebraska Community College Cougars from Scottsbluff, Neb., 63-60 in the opening round of the Division I Women's National Championship in Salina, Kan.
The 16th-seeded Lady Roadrunners (21-9) jumped out to a 23-12 lead in the first half. The Cougars cut the advantage to five at halftime. The Lady Roadrunners pushed their lead to 55-38, but saw their 17-point second-half advantage slip away. Western Nebraska finished the game on a 25-5 run to secure the victory.
Sophomore guard/forward Apiphany Woods led three Lady Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 13 points. Freshman center Alecia Cooley pitched in with 11 points, pulled down a team-high six rebounds and led the team in blocked shots with two. Sophomore guard Antoinette Taylor added 10 points and dished out a team-high four assists. Sophomore guard Adella Randle-EL led the team with five steals.
“Overall, it’s been a great year and we accomplished a lot,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “Our sophomores have done a good job for us during their careers at SFCC.”
