The Roadrunners gave their home fans something to remember in their final appearance at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center this season. SFCC (25-6) defeated Highland Community College from Highland, Ill., 74-54 in the district championship game March 8. This was the Roadrunners’ 15th consecutive win.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 21-9 lead to open the game. The Cougars battled back to trim the deficit to five at halftime.
“We did a good job moving the basketball and making the extra passes,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Guys were able to make shots, and we were able to get out and run and start our transition game. After about 10 minutes it went the other way. We made some substitutions and some players got into foul trouble.”
SFCC outscored Highland 44-29 in the second half to secure the victory. Sophomore wing Kedar Edwards led three Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 23 points. Sophomore guard Kevin Punter added 19 points, and also tied for the team lead in rebounds with nine, dished out a team-high seven assists and led the team in steals with three. Sophomore guard DeRon Hill also pulled down nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Joseph Thomasson added 14 points.
Fans were treated to a victory celebration at the conclusion of the game. The Roadrunners and Lady Roadrunners each cut down a net to celebrate their region and district tournament championships.
“It was a great moment,” said Thomas. “I really appreciate all the people who came out tonight to watch the game. It was a packed house. We didn’t play great, but we made enough plays down the stretch to get the win.”
SFCC now awaits the announcement of the bracket for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men’s basketball national championships. The tournament will take place March 17-22 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kan.
