The Roadrunners wrapped up the regular-season portion of their schedule with their 12th straight win Feb. 22 in front of a large crowd celebrating Homecoming and Sophomore Night at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. SFCC (22-6, 8-0 in Region 16) defeated the Mineral Area College Cardinals from Park Hills 90-67.
SFCC led 41-27 at halftime and outscored the Cardinals 49-40 in the second half to secure the win.
“Our guys played extremely hard,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Leading up to the game, I was wondering how much our guys really wanted to go 8-0. I think they definitely came out and answered my question. They played unselfishly. It was a great night; during some segments of the game they definitely played at a championship level.”
Freshman guard Dondre Alexander led four Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 22 points and led the team in steals with three. Sophomore guard Kevin Punter contributed 19 points. Sophomore guard Joseph Thomasson added 15 points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Sophomore wing Kedar Edwards added 13 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Coach Thomas was pleased with the contributions of his sophomores.
“We’re trying to get better every year,” said Thomas. “We’ve won 20 games four out of the last five years. The one year we didn’t, we played a pretty brutal schedule and probably could have won 20 games that year as well. The program is headed in the right direction and our sophomores are definitely a big part of that.”
SFCC will be the number one seed in the Region 16 tournament and will take on the winner of the quarterfinal game between Three Rivers Community College and Mineral Area College at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at Jefferson College in Hillsboro.
