Former SFCC Roadrunner Earns Big 12 Conference Honor
Tuesday, December 17, 2013
Former Roadrunner and current Baylor University Bear Kenny Chery on Dec. 9 was named a Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week. A panel of media members voted on the award.

The junior guard helped lead his team to a 67-62 victory over the then-ranked No. 3 University of Kentucky Wildcats, which is the highest Associated Press-ranked team Baylor has defeated in the history of its program.

Chery scored a team-high 18 points and dished out five assists during 34 minutes of play. He knocked down a pair of free throws to give his team a one-point advantage with just over six minutes remaining. He is tied for second in the Big 12 with 44 assists for the season. This is Chery’s first Big 12 Conference honor.

“The way Kenny is playing for Baylor is how he played at SFCC,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Kenny is efficient and is a great point guard. He controls the tempo of the game for Baylor; when Baylor needs him to score, he steps up and hits midrange jump shots and free throws down the stretch.”

The Montreal, Quebec, native ranks third on the team in scoring with an average 11.6 points per game. He leads the team in free-throw percentage with just under 91 percent. He is tied for the team lead in steals and leads the team in minutes played, averaging 29.2 minutes per game.

Chery had a stellar two-year career as a Roadrunner, earning honorable mention All-American honors as a sophomore and All-Region 16 honors twice during his career. Chery authored two of the top-10 highest scoring seasons in Roadrunner history. He capped his career scoring 16.4 points per contest, which places him fourth on SFCC’s all-time list. He also finished fifth and ninth in single-season assists, dishing out 3.96 assists as a freshman and 3.75 assists as a sophomore.

“Kenny did a lot for our program, State Fair Community College and the community,” said Thomas. “Many people here are very proud of him. He has represented us well, not only by how he plays basketball but also off the floor.”
