State Fair Community College to Host 12th Annual W-K Holiday Shoot-Out

            Local basketball fans have an opportunity to see some of the best high school basketball players and teams in the area. The event begins on Thursday, Dec. 19 and continues on Dec. 20, Dec. 21, Dec. 27, and Dec. 28 at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
            The idea for the Shoot-Out came 12 years ago from Tom Knight, who was the athletic director at Smith-Cotton. “We implemented it in the spring and summer of 2001, and had the first Shoot-Out that Dec.” said SFCC Athletic Director Darren Pannier. “He had the idea to bring in different opponents for the area schools to play. After he (Knight) gave me the idea, I just starting calling local high schools and asking them if they would play a school from outside their area.”
            The Thursday, Dec. 19 action consists of a doubleheader between Shoot-Out newcomers Green Ridge and Lakeland. The girl’s contest tips off at 6 p.m. The boy’s contest will follow at 7:30 p.m.
            The action on Friday, Dec. 20 consists of a pair of doubleheaders starting with a matchup between LaMonte and Northwest. The girl’s game begins at 4:30 p.m. Senior Cortlen Austion returns to lead the Mustangs against LaMonte in the boy’s game beginning at 6 p.m. Austion scored 18 points in last year’s Shoot-Out to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
            A doubleheader between Sweet Springs and Pilot Grove will close out the action on day two of the Shoot-Out. Junior Nicole Bright returns to lead Sweet Springs in the girl’s contest beginning at 7:30 p.m. Bright earned All-Tournament Team honors last season by scoring 21 points in last year’s matchup. The boy’s will follow at 9 p.m.
            The Saturday, Dec. 21 action begins with another appearance from a member of last year’s All -Tournament Team. Slater senior Shay Babcock returns to lead her team in a game against Smithton. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Two members of last year’s All- Tournament Team will lead their teams into the Noon game. Senior Dane Apsher and the Smithton Tigers will play senior Caleb Pemberton and the Slater Wildcats.
            The Windsor and Skyline girls will tipoff at 1:30 p.m. This matchup will feature two more All-Tournament Team members from last year. Junior Bailey Rollins scored 15 points in the Shoot-Out last year for the Lady Greyhounds. Junior Madisen Brethower contributed 18 points for Skyline. The boy’s game between Windsor and Skyline will follow. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
A pair of doubleheaders will close out the day’s action. The Santa Fe and Sacred Heart girls will take the floor at 4:30 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 6 p.m. The Marshall and Smith-Cotton girls will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 9 p.m.
After taking a holiday break action resumes on Friday, Dec. 27, with three doubleheaders beginning with Stover playing Fayette. The girl’s game will tipoff at Noon. Senior Raejaun Williams leads the Falcons against Stover in the boy’s contest set to tipoff at 1:30 p.m. Williams scored 15 points for Fayette last year to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
Stephanie Oswald returns to lead the Otterville girls against Tipton at 3 p.m. Oswald scored 19 points to earn All-Tournament Team honors at last year’s Shoot-Out. The boys contest will follow at 4:30 p.m.
Concordia and Lincoln will round out the day’s action with a girl’s game beginning at 6 p.m. The boys contest between Concordia and Lincoln will feature Concordia senior Cass Heismsoth who scored 20 points in last year’s Shoot-Out to earn All-Tournament Team honors. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The action on the final day begins with a doubleheader between Warsaw and Grain Valley. The girl’s game begins at Noon. The boy’s contest at 1:30 p.m. features two members of last year’s All-Tournament Team. Senior Jesse Chamberlain leads Warsaw against fellow senior Daniel Mahurin and Grain Valley.
Mack’s Creek and Knob Noster will face off in another doubleheader with the girl’s game beginning at 3 p.m. The boy’s game will follow at 4:30 pm.
The final doubleheader of the 2013 W-K Shoot-Out will feature newcomer Butler against Cole Camp in a girl’s contest beginning at 6 p.m. Cole Camp junior Tanner Oelrichs returns to lead the Bluebirds against Butler. He scored 18 points last year en route to All-Tournament honors. The boy’s game begins at 7:30 p.m.
The title sponsor of the event is W-K Chevrolet. The co-sponsors are McDonald’s, Pummill’s Sporting Goods, Chouteau Purified Water, Pepsi, Ditzfeld Transfer, BackBone of Health, Hank’s Portables and Septic Services, and Jones Brothers Marine.
“The sponsors help make sure that the doors stay open,” said Pannier. “It’s a costly event. I believe SFCC really benefits from it because it gets prospective students on campus.”
The admission prices for the event are five dollars per day for adults. Kids 12 and under are admitted free.
