The 24th ranked State Fair Community College Lady Roadrunners closed out their portion of the McDonald’s Classic with a hard fought loss to the Butler Community College Lady Grizzlies from El Dorado, Kan., by a score of 62-59. After the Lady Grizzlies went on a 12-0 run, SFCC (1-1) found itself in a 19-9 hole with about nine minutes remaining in the first half.
“We’ve told our players the last two days that this is going to be a game of runs,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “When good teams play, there’s going to be those types of runs. We knew that they were going to give us a good punch, and we knew that we were capable of coming back, and we did. It comes down to being disciplined in taking care of business.”
SFCC went on to answer with a run and closed the half with a 30-27 advantage. Butler tied the game at 35 with less than 17 minutes remaining in the contest. The lead changed hands seven times in the game and featured 10 ties. The Lady Roadrunners had an opportunity in the final minute but failed to convert. The Lady Grizzlies made enough plays in the final minute to preserve the victory.
“Wasn’t that a good game?” asked Bucher. “Someone has to lose. It comes down to the end and the team that makes the least amount of mistakes is going to win.”
Sophomore guard/forward Apiphany Woods led three Lady Roadrunners in double figure scoring with 19 points. She also pulled down a team high nine rebounds in the contest. Sophomore guard Antoinette Taylor contributed 14 points in the game. She also tied for the team lead in assists with three. Sophomore guard Adella Randle-EL added 10 points and dished out three assists in the game. She also tied for the team lead in steals with two along with Taylor. Randle-EL and freshman center Alecia Cooley tied for the team lead in blocked shots with two each.
The Lady Roadrunners will travel to Mt. Carmel, Ill., on Friday, Nov. 8, to take part in the Wabash Valley Classic. SFCC will take on the host Wabash Valley College on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Lady Roadrunners will take on the Olney Central College Lady Knights at 3 p.m.
