The State Fair Community College Roadrunners took on the Missouri Valley College Junior Varsity Vikings from Marshall in the opening round of the McDonald’s Classic on Friday night, Nov. 1, at the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. SFCC (1-0) used a 20-2 run to open the game.
“I thought we rebounded the ball well early in the game,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Missouri Valley took some tough shots. They had a lot of “one and done” offensive possessions, and then I don’t know what happened. After about five or 10 minutes of that, the floodgates opened, and they got whatever they wanted.”
Missouri Valley cut the lead to 34-23 at halftime. SFCC came out in the second half with another run to secure the 82-60 victory.
“We came out in the second half and got some stops on the defensive end,” said Thomas. “We had some guys make shots and kind of spread out the lead a little bit.”
Sophomore guard Kevin Punter led four Roadrunners in double figure scoring with 17 points. He also tied for the team lead in rebounds with 11 with sophomore forward Marcus Mondaine. Freshman guard DeAngelo Stephens-Bell contributed 13 points in his first game at SFCC. Sophomore wing Ben Denbow added 12 points. He knocked down two of three shots from beyond the three-point arc. Freshman guard Jalen Williams pitched in with 10 points in his first game as a Roadrunner. Stephens-Bell dished out a team high four assists in the game. Freshman guard Dondre Alexander led the team in blocked shots with two. Freshman wing Jerrard Davis led the team in steals with two.
