The Roadrunners traveled to Fort Leonard Wood Oct. 16 to take on the Columbia College Cougars in SFCC’s second scrimmage of the preseason. The teams played two 20-minute halves, resetting the score at halftime.
Columbia College was victorious in the first half 44-27. SFCC bounced back to win the second half 40-38. SFCC freshman guard DeAngelo Stephens-Bell drove to the basket in the waning seconds of the second half, drew a foul and knocked down two big free throws to give his team the lead. SFCC sealed the game with a defensive stop on the next possession.
“We really struggled to score in the first half,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Columbia College did a great job of running their offense; it was a good workout for our guys. Columbia College is coming off a 35-1 year and they have a lot of players back. In the last five minutes of the second half we did a much better job offensively of sharing the ball and getting the ball to players who could make shots.”
Stephens-Bell led SFCC in scoring with 24 points. Freshman guard Dondre Alexander contributed 12 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Jalen Williams added 10 points. Sophomore center Isaac Freeman pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and registered a team-high two blocked shots. Sophomore forward Marcus Mondaine and Stephens-Bell tied for the team lead in steals with two apiece.
