The Lady Roadrunners were undefeated Oct. 12 in scrimmages with three teams at the Courts Shoot-out in Springfield. The format of the scrimmages was two 20-minute running clock halves.
SFCC defeated John Wood Community College from Quincy, Ill., 50-25 in the first scrimmage.
“We played really well,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We took charge early in the game; we had about a 30-point lead.”
Freshman center Alecia Cooley led the Lady Roadrunners in scoring with 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Sophomore guard/forward Apiphany Woods contributed seven points. Sophomore guard Sannayyiah Johnson also registered seven points, three rebounds and three steals.
The Lady Roadrunners took on the College of the Ozarks from Point Lookout, Mo., in their second game of the day. SFCC led 28-11 at halftime. The Lady Roadrunners held on to the lead to claim a 47-30 victory.
“It took a while to build the lead,” said Bucher. “The College of the Ozarks team shoots the ball very well and does a good job running offense. Our defense and speed really caused them problems.”
Every Lady Roadrunner who played in that game scored. Sophomore guard Adella Randle-EL registered nine points and three steals; Woods contributed nine points and five rebounds; sophomore guard Antoinette Taylor added six points; and Cooley pitched in with six points and three rebounds.
The Lady Roadrunners took on Cottey College from Nevada, Mo., in their final scrimmage of the day. SFCC was victorious 41-23.
“We jumped out early in the game and got a big lead,” said Bucher. “Our speed and depth really helped us in this game, and our players played with a lot of passion.”
Johnson contributed eight points for SFCC and Woods contributed seven points and four rebounds. Bucher was also pleased with the defensive effort of sophomore forward Sydonia Daniels.
The Lady Roadrunners will travel to Belleville, Ill., Oct. 20 to participate in the Southwestern Illinois College Jamboree. SFCC will play John A. Logan College, Parkland College and Illinois Central College.
