Wednesday, July 24, 2013

SEDALIA—State Fair Community College sophomore guards Joe Thomasson and Kevin Punter recently participated in the Mullen’s Top 100 Junior College Camp July 13-14 in St. Charles. The camp was hosted by Jerry Mullen and his staff, who invite the top 100 junior college players from around the country to showcase their talents for hundreds of coaches from four-year colleges and universities.

Thomasson and Punter each played four games on the same team at the camp. Both players drew praise from coaches from four-year colleges and universities.

“They both played well,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “Coach Sash and I heard positive feedback from a lot of coaches. Our players did a good job of guarding, scoring and sharing the basketball.”

Both players earned All-Region and All-Conference honors during their freshman season at SFCC. Thomasson was the team’s second leading scorer, averaging 13.9 points per game, and led the team in assists with 147 on the season.  Punter averaged 13.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest and registered 37 steals for the season.

Thomasson and Punter were happy with their performance at the camp, but see more work that needs to be done before their sophomore season.

“I was pleased with the way I passed the ball and got my teammates involved in the game,” said Thomasson. “I was also happy with my effort on defense. I thought I did a nice job of guarding the ball.”

“I’m going to continue to prepare for the upcoming season,” said Punter. “It’s definitely going to be a great season. I feel like Joe and I have more of a leadership role to take on this season. We are ready for that role.”

SFCC will open the season on Nov. 1 against the Missouri Valley College Junior Varsity as part of the McDonald’s Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
