Former State Fair Community College Roadrunners Head Coach and Athletic Director Bill Barton has been selected for induction into the Region 16 Hall of Fame. Colleges in this region include Mineral Area College, Missouri State University-West Plains, Moberly Area Community College, and Three Rivers Community College.
“It’s an honor,” said Barton, who was notified April 17. “I’m very happy with it. It was a surprise when Coach Thomas called me, because I really didn’t even know we had a Region 16 Hall of Fame. I’m pleased to be nominated and proud of the fact that they thought enough of me to put me in the Hall of Fame.”
Barton compiled more than 600 victories during his 35-year tenure at SFCC and led three teams to the Region 16 championships.
Barton also led the Roadrunners to two National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournaments. The first was during the 1971-72 season, when SFCC finished with a 22-15 record. The second was during the 1975-76 season, when SFCC finished with a 31-6 record. Barton earned Region 16 Coach of the Year honors for both seasons.
Barton coached 39 student athletes who earned All-Region 16 honors and five student athletes who earned NJCAA All-American honors during his time at SFCC. Many of the student athletes Barton coached went on to continue their academic and athletic careers at four year-colleges and universities.
Barton was inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1991. In 2010 he was inducted into the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the SFCC Roadrunner Athletics Hall of Fame.
