The Roadrunners lost their final regular-season game 74-73 to the Mineral Area College Cardinals Feb. 23 at Park Hills.
SFCC (20-9, 5-3) led 17-16 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Mineral Area led 37-30 at halftime.
The Roadrunners found themselves in a 14-point hole in the second half at 46-32. Mineral Area’s lead was the biggest for either team in the contest. SFCC sophomore guard Kenny Chery converted an old fashioned three-point-play to tie the game at 58 with eight minutes remaining. The Roadrunners grabbed a one-point advantage with 15 seconds remaining, but Mineral Area made the plays in the final seconds to secure the victory.
Freshman guard Joe Thomasson led four Roadrunners in double-figure scoring with 19 points. Freshman guard Kevin Punter and sophomore wing Jacob Williams contributed 15 points each. Chery pitched in with 14 points and a team-high five assists. Punter pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and registered a team-high three steals.
SFCC has earned the number three seed in the upcoming Region XVI tournament. The Roadrunners and Cardinals will face off again in a semifinal match at 8 p.m. March 1 at Jefferson College in Hillsboro.
