The Lady Roadrunners (19-6) emerged with a hard-fought 75-71 victory Feb. 9 when they took on the Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley Lady Scouts in Kansas City.
Penn Valley jumped out to an early 12-7 lead in the first half. SFCC fought back to take a 17-16 advantage with under 13 minutes to go in the first half. The lead changed hands 15 times in the game and there were nine ties. SFCC closed the half on a run to take a 41-35 lead into halftime.
“We were able to knock down some shots that we missed earlier in the half,” said Lady Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Bucher. “We were trying to penetrate the seams in their zone defense and either take the mid-range jump shot or hand off to the post.”
The Lady Roadrunners found themselves trailing by seven points with less than two minutes remaining in the game. They changed up their defense to change the momentum of the game.
“We went to a man-to-man press and we were able to get an immediate trap along the sideline,” said Bucher. “We created some steals and layups to get back into the game.”
Freshman guard Adella Randle-EL hit one of two free throw attempts to tie the game at 67 and send it into overtime. SFCC took control of the game in the overtime period, outscoring Penn Valley eight to four to emerge with the victory.
Randle-EL led four Lady Roadrunners in double figures with 25 points. Freshman guard Antoinette Taylor and sophomore guard Mia Wesley contributed 11 points each. Freshman guard/forward Julia Torres added 10 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Taylor and Torres dished out a team-high three assists each. Taylor registered three steals.
The Lady Roadrunners will return home Feb. 13 for a Region XVI contest with the Crowder Lady Riders, who are currently in first place. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
The SFCC Athletics Department will sponsor “Think Pink! Bleed Blue!” night, a cancer fundraiser. Sophomores on both basketball teams and the Spirit Squad also will be recognized.
