The Roadrunners used a balanced scoring effort to pick up a 98-67 victory over the Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzlies Jan. 22 in West Plains. SFCC freshman guard Kevin Punter knocked down a big three-point shot to give his team an early 8-0 lead. SFCC (15-6, 2-1 in Region XVI) pushed the advantage to 48-32 at halftime.
“Our guys were definitely ready to play,” said Roadrunners Head Coach Kevin Thomas. “We made some shots early, did a good job defensively and never looked back. They paid really close attention and executed the game plan. It was fun to watch.”
SFCC’s lead grew to as many as 40 points in the second half at 92-52. Six SFCC players scored in double figures in the contest.
Sophomore guard Kenny Chery registered a double double. He led his team in scoring with 28 points and also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Ayo Ojo contributed 15 points and Punter added 13. Sophomore wing Jacob Williams and freshman guard Joe Thomasson added 11 points apiece. Thomasson also dished out a team-high 12 assists to record another double double for SFCC. Freshman guard Deron Hill pitched in with 10 points and Chery and Thomasson tied for the team lead in steals with two apiece. Ojo blocked a team-high two shots in the game.
“Everyone came in and give us good minutes,” said Thomas. “Kenny (Chery) made some tough shots. He also had 10 rebounds. Joe (Thomasson) was good again. Kevin (Punter) shot the ball well for us. Ayo (Ojo) was strong defensively. Jacob (Williams) got some big rebounds.”
SFCC will face another big Region XVI test Jan.26 when the Mineral Area College Cardinals come to town. This game is also part of the Midwest Community College Athletic Conference. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center.
